IBM have just announced that they are providing native support for the Apple iPhone in their Domino collaboration and email platform.

This is great news for Notes users who want to get their email on their iPhone!

Domino 8.5.1 supports the iPhone through Lotus Notes Traveler software and is the first version of the collaboration software to do so, according to IBM. The addition of push e-mail, contacts and calendar will allow iPhone users to automatically get the latest data from their enterprise Notes system and work with that content on the phone while they are out of coverage or otherwise offline. If an iPhone is lost or stolen, the Notes data can be wiped from it remotely for security.

Palm Pre and Microsoft Exchange not playing nicely together

June 7th, 2009

200906071857.jpg 200906071858.jpg

Talking to a few friends based in the US it seems many people are having issues trying to get their new Palm Pre to talk to Microsoft Exchange.

It seems that despite marketing the Pre as having Exchange support it doesn’t support the Security Policies. Specifically it doesn’t support 2 of the most basic – Device PIN and Device Wipe.

If a user tries to setup their device to access Exchange they will most likely get this error:

“The mail server requires security policies that are not supported”

This means that if an organisation has an Exchange policy with the Device PIN policy set (the most basic) then it will not be allowed access to Exchange at all.

This is similar to the early implementations on the Treo (Palm OS based) and Centro devices. These were resolved with ROM upgrades released after the initial device release.

Palm/Sprint are taking a lot of heat online about this right now….

Thread Compressor for Outlook

April 15th, 2009

200904122007.jpg

If you use Outlook for your email then this is an essential tool! Basically it will delete unnecessary emails by deleting the ‘threads’ of conversation and keep the 1 copy of the email that has all the content in it. The premise is that most emails are just replies to the original message and you don’t need to keep all messages.

Ewan has been developing this for years and it’s available FREE now on his new site HERE

Outlook Mobile Access via HTML or WAP

April 1st, 2009

A long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) Microsoft had a product called Mobile Information Server (MIS). This Server product was the first generation of mobile access to email. Mobile Information Server got integrated into Exchange 2003 providing the Push Email solution.

One component which was removed with the demise of Mobile Information Server and the focus on Push Email was the ability to access your mailbox using a Mobile Browser via HTML or WAP. There was a component called Outlook Mobile Access which provided this previously.

I’ve had a few customers asking for this functionality – particularly those that don’t want ANY data stored on the device.

One of my colleagues discovered this 3rd party solution called OWA for PDA and OWA for WAP.

OWA For PDA and OWA For WAP are server-based, client-independent, mobile Outlook Web Access addons that allow you to access your mailbox, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes from an HTML or WAP enabled mobile.

Googlemail – Sent from….. my location

February 12th, 2009

Google have just added a very cool feature to Googlemail where you can have your signature include your location.

200902121434.jpg

You can turn on Location in Signature from the Labs tab under Settings, then go to your signature preferences and check the box next to “Append your location to the signature.”

It finds your location using IP detection but can also be enhanced if you are using a browser that has a version of Gears that supports the location module.

Let’s hope Google and device manufacturers add this to their devices so you can replace – ‘Sent from my iPhone/Blackberry/Windows Mobile device’ to something far more interesting and jealousy provoking ;)

You can get more details on the feature HERE
