Think You Might Be Addicted to Email? You’re Not Alone

July 30th, 2007

AOL last week published an article on a survey they recently concluded looking at how Americans are using Portable Devices to check email from virtually anywhere…. in the Bathroom, While Driving and Even in Church!

From the somewhat scary results it seems that 83% of American Email users check email on vacation and 4 out of 10 users said that their ability to access email was a key decision point in selecting their vacation destination!

Now correct me if I’m wrong here but isn’t the purpose of a vacation to be to recharge the batteries and take a break from work?

If you take a look at Dictionary.com it defines vacation as:

1. a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel; recess or holiday: Schoolchildren are on vacation now.

2. a part of the year, regularly set aside, when normal activities of law courts, legislatures, etc., are suspended.

3. freedom or release from duty, business, or activity.

4. an act or instance of vacating.

So whilst the study is interesting from a statistical perspective it does disturb me greatly that so many people are checking e-mail whilst on holiday and even more dangerously whilst driving!!

There were some tips in the report on how to combat email addiction – I particularly liked the Rule of Three!

**Follow the Rule of Three: If you have emailed back and forth with the same person on the same topic more than three times, it is time to pick up the phone and have a conversation

HP IPAQ 514 ‘Business’ Review

July 30th, 2007

HP iPAQ 514

Like the HTC Panda/XDA Argon, the HP Ipaq 514 is getting some tough press due to it’s unimaginative specification and it’s bland nature.

The reality is that both devices aren’t targeting the early adopter/techies but more the majority of business users who are looking for solid devices without all the flair.  Take a look at the most popular business handset ever… the Nokia 6210 and 6310i

Over on Tracy and Matt’s blog they’ve done a detailed review from a business perspective of the HP Ipaq 514 device.

It’s worth a read especially as the 514 is currently under 150 pounds in price!!

This is what I love about the Blogosphere! I wrote a blog article about how cool it is that people are uploading their profile pictures on Facebook meaning that you can then use them in your Outlook Contacts.

Well – literally the same day Ross Dargan wrote an application to automate that process so that your Outlook will be synchronised with your Facebook contacts… then they are sync’d onto your Windows Mobile device!

You can now download the application from Facebook – it’s called FONEBOOK.

Now all we need is for someone to write an app doing it directly to your Windows Mobile device! :)

:-) 15th bday txtN

Today is the 15th Birthday of the Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) the principle component behind the application of SMS Texting.  The first SMS Centre was conceived in 1992 and could cope with 10 messages per second, the latest solutions can cope with 16,000 messages per second in a single rack of infrastructure!

Despite efforts by many operators to broaden the use of data services – SMS still remains their predominant source of data revenue and it’s use across the world has changed the way people communicate.

So Happy 15th Birthday SMS !
