For my US colleagues and friends – the 4th July is coming up next week!
Astraware (makers of very cool Windows Mobile games) have written a Firework application which you can download for free!

Microsoft Surface (codenamed Milan) computing is something that looks incredibly exciting not only for the multi touch capabilities in terms of interface but also the potential for interaction with Mobile devices. The video below from Popularmechanics.com shows the surface technology in action.

This device has already seen the light of day through O2 as the XDA Argon.
HTC have made it available direct as the HTC P6300.

This device for me is more targeted towards Enterprise application use with a specification to match:
3.5 inch screen
Tri-band GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth® and IrDA for truly connected data centric uses.
Expand your options with SDIO compatibility for additional memory, accessories and peripherals.
Process applications faster and store more data with 256MB internal ROM and 400MHz processor.

I had an interesting question from a customer today about wanting to add to the list of Emergency Numbers that you can dial when the device is locked.
Today that is limited to the various different international emergency numbers but the customer wanted to add their own emergency disaster recovery number to their devices.
I discovered various articles across the Internet including this great one on Modaco
In summary to do this you have to modify the registry key HKLM\Security\Ecall
It is currently set to the Values: “List”=”911*112*08*999*”
You can’t simply change the numbers by editing the values as you’ll get an error message: “Unable to perform this operation”. What you need to do is rename ‘List’ to ‘ListX’ then create a new Multi-String Value, type ‘List’.
One of the challenges however is that the Security registry key can be a protected area on many devices so you may need to work with your mobile operator or OEM.

Over the past few weeks since the launch of the HTC Touch I’ve been talking to a number of people using it who are getting a little frustrated with the lack of T9 or keyboard on it.
To be fair – most of those are ex-QWERTY device users who have migrated to the touchscreen only interface.
I’m really surprised that HTC hasn’t included the T9 Keypad that they have done on some of the earlier devices.
I’ve been scouring the ‘net for a good T9 SIP but still haven’t found one…. (well not one that’s legal)
I have tried the SPB Full-Screen Keyboard on it though which is really good on the Touch!

One of the regular questions I’ve had over the course of the two days at MEDC is really around customers looking for device recommendations. Many customers are looking for a specific business requirement, for example rugged devices with GPS or a 3G device.
Now of course you could spend hours scouring the 50 OEMS of Windows Mobile sites to find all those details however I’ve often recommended customers just go to pdadb.net
When I just checked they have 786 Handheld devices in their database which can then be searched to identify those devices with GPS, 3G etc…..

The guys over at PocketPCSoft.net had an early video of the unboxing of the HP Smartphone. They have followed this up with a detailed review of the HP 514 Messenger device.
It’s definitely worthy of a read if you are considering this device!

Well the first day is nearly over…… after the Keynote this morning, my Security session and a couple of interviews I finally get a chance to blog about MEDC.
There is a real great buzz at MEDC Europe this year and we have far more attendees this year than last!
We have a huge partner pavilion with great support from partners such as Handango, Orange, Motorola and many many others.
One thing I discovered is this really neat docking solution for the HTC Advantage/X7500.
The docking station allows you to connect your HTC Advantage with USB peripherals such as a keyboard and mouse. It also has a VGA connector and headphone jack.
Very cool!

Well after a 2hr wait on the runway at Heathrow and an aborted landing…. I’m finally here at MEDC Europe in Berlin.
We have over 500 developers here at the event so it should be a great event over the next two days!
If you are here – make sure you come and say Hi!
